Laughter is the Best Medicine

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Prison is no picnic. Guards control your movement, prison policies limit and restricted agency, and the inmate population foster an environment of disharmony, disconnection, and distrust. Waking up day after day to such a monotonous dull cycle leaves you with only one option for relief: laugher.

However, prison's no laughing matter, you say? Make it one. When that guard blows you off, laugh. When your prison boss pisses you off, laugh. Reacting with laughter first creates space for a responsible response second. You can use this same techniques in the free world.

Humor derives from the unique ability to take real life situations and make them funny. This ability allows us to circumvent our ingrained jaded perspectives of seeing and being in the world.

This transformed seeing and being sparks a positive self-conscious awareness. A self-conscious awareness which produces actual life changes, which are conducive to our self interest. Because in terms of self interest, we start to grasp our responsibility for how we have been in the world, and our accountability as to how we will be in the world.

We need to seek more humor in our life. Therefore, live life as a comedy not like a tragedy. Make your discomforts the punchline!
